Remuneration Surveys - Smelting, Refining and Petro-Chemical Industry

The most recent Australasian Smelting, Refining & Petro-Chemical Industry Remuneration Report was published in April 2010 - 21 companies managing 28 processing operations participated.

The purpose of the Report is to provide the Directors, Remuneration Committees and Executive Management of participating organisations with factual data and reliable analyses of the remuneration of key personnel in the Australasian Smelting, Refining & Petro-Chemical Industry. It focuses on installations employing high temperature / high pressure technology. This includes oil & gas condensate installations; petroleum refineries; bauxite / alumina refineries & aluminium smelters; laterite nickel, copper & sulphide gold autoclave operations; chemical, fertilizer & explosives manufacturing installations; and smelters & refineries in other mineral processing areas (eg zinc).

The Australasian Smelting, Refining & Petro-Chemical Industry Remuneration Report has been published biannually since October 2002.

Scope of the Survey

Set out below is a summary of the scope of the Australasian Smelting, Refining & Petro-Chemical Industry Remuneration Report:

  • it covers Executive and Corporate as well as operations staff and traditional “award” positions in all Australian states and operations in the Australasian region;
  • it reports on Base Salary, Total Fixed Remuneration (including the value of benefits such as motor vehicles & superannuation) and Total Variable Remuneration (showing the impact of incentives);
  • for executive roles, it investigates the value of share option & other long term incentives;
  • it measures market movements during the past 6 and 12 months for matched samples of companies for each position; and,
  • it provides a detailed analysis of practices in respect of incentives and benefits.
